Entrepreneur and flag etiquette expert Stella Waltz shares the story behind Old Glory with third graders at Three Oaks Elementary School in Virginia Beach
Virginia Beach, VA - November 11, 2015
Stella Waltz, “The Flag Lady” and co-owner of Va. Beach-based JES Foundation Repair, shared her message of respect and reverence for the American flag and those who fought for its sake, with third graders during a Veterans Day-themed presentation at Three Oaks Elementary School. Highlighting little-known facts about the flag, her presentation taught students how to interact appropriately with the flag at all times.
The third-grade classes learned how to address the flag whenever “The Star Spangled Banner” is played and delved into the meaning of various lines in the U.S. National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance. Waltz explained the history behind the stars and stripes and why tattered and worn flags should not be flown using visual references. The interactive lesson gave students an opportunity to identify instances where proper flag etiquette was being displayed.
The historic photograph, Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, was also discussed and students recognized the significance behind the iconic image. The presentation culminated with a touching exchange of stories from students whose family members have served in the armed forces. One student spoke about her father who had recently been deployed to Japan for two years. Another student revealed that his grandfather fought in the Vietnam War.
Waltz, the daughter of a World War II veteran (D-Day, Iwo Jima and Okinawa), learned early on to honor the flag and has carried a profound sense of patriotism and pride ever since. She launched a flag collection site at her company’s headquarters in 2009. Waltz speaks for free at schools, civic groups, professional organizations and community associations.
